SEWING CLASS

Poshu works with women in remote villages to establish sewing classes in the community. We provide 3 treadle sewing machines, black board and chalk, tape measures, scissors, needles and thread. The village provide the teacher and a small room to meet in. Most classes have 25 students, with previous students able to use the machines for their own projects.

The women learn to repair clothes and sew for their families. They also learn about financial literacy and to set up small business. Many now earn income from sewing and some girls have set up stores in the market with their own sewing machines.

Poshu sewing class is a safe meeting place for women to discuss anything that is important to them. Women learn to speak up. Teenage girls newly arrived in their husbands village make friendships that they value. Our Poshu sewing teachers are trained to also talk to girls about health and hygiene, managing periods, child birth and raising children etc.
