LITERACY CLASSES IN ENGLISH AND THEIR OWN LANGUAGE

POSHU starts with a village meeting. Small things can bring change to a village. Small things get people talking and working together towards a common goal. Literacy classes begin with a box of text books, exercise books, pens and pencils.

Also a roll book for the teacher to keep records, a blackboard to prop up under a tree, a box of chalk. Women sit on the grass, they select one of them to be the teacher, usually a woman that has been to school up to Senior 3 with good teaching skills.

Women meet to practice speaking in English which is the common language in their country, yet most do not speak English.

“We need to learn English so we can talk to our customers in the market when we go to sell, and when we take our child to the clinic.”

How do you mitigate change when a village is caught in a gridlock of past trauma and modern upheaval?
